“THAT WAS TOO EASY,” Dick said once they were back in the limousine and speeding away from UN Headquarters.

“How so?”

“Well, you just walked in, pointed out the supposed Antichrist, and they hauled him away, no questions asked. Just on your word alone. I mean, who the hell are you? As far as they should be able to tell, you’re just some nut off the street claiming to be Satan. They wouldn’t haul Limbaugh away solely on the word of some random nut. There’s something screwy going on here.”

“This may be a hard truth for someone like you to accept, Dick,” Satan said, “but, unlike you, most people on this planet know me when they see me. I don’t have to prove myself to them. I’m like Christ and God in that regard. And if they don’t recognize me, they at least feel a vague sense of unease in the pits of their very souls when they look at me.”

“No,” Dick said, shaking his head. “I don’t buy that.” He tapped his ear bud. “Carl. Concentrate on the Secretary General like I asked, but dig deep into the backgrounds of every single member of the General Assembly. Include their aides. Hell, include the caterer to today’s event. Include the freaking Assembly Hall doorman for that matter.” He waited for an acknowledgment, then tapped off the bud. He smiled at Satan. “Don’t worry. I’ll get to the bottom of your conspiracy.”

“Oh, so now it’s a conspiracy, is it?”

“Yes. I’m starting to think you’re more than just a random lunatic. You’re part of some bigger con game. And somehow the Secretary General is involved. I saw you wink at him after Limbaugh was hauled away. Didn’t think I’d catch that, did you?”

Satan folded his hands on his knees. “And tell me, Dick. With which eye did I wink?”

“Your left.”

“Exactly,” Satan said. “The same eye that I said was giving me trouble, and for which the Secretary General gave me the eye drops. I winked at him as a final thank you for his small kindness.”

Dick shook his head. “Not buying it. He’s the real Antichrist in your delusion, isn’t he? Limbaugh was just an innocent decoy. Maybe you and Guptachek share the same insanity. If he’s got a psychological impairment that’s been hidden from the public, my people will find it.”

“I’m sure they would, if it existed.”

From that point on, they rode in silence to their hotel.
