âTHAT WAS TOO EASY,â Dick said once they were back in the limousine and speeding away from UN Headquarters.
âHow so?â
âWell, you just walked in, pointed out the supposed Antichrist, and they hauled him away, no questions asked. Just on your word alone. I mean, who the hell are you? As far as they should be able to tell, youâre just some nut off the street claiming to be Satan. They wouldnât haul Limbaugh away solely on the word of some random nut. Thereâs something screwy going on here.â
âThis may be a hard truth for someone like you to accept, Dick,â Satan said, âbut, unlike you, most people on this planet know me when they see me. I donât have to prove myself to them. Iâm like Christ and God in that regard. And if they donât recognize me, they at least feel a vague sense of unease in the pits of their very souls when they look at me.â
âNo,â Dick said, shaking his head. âI donât buy that.â He tapped his ear bud. âCarl. Concentrate on the Secretary General like I asked, but dig deep into the backgrounds of every single member of the General Assembly. Include their aides. Hell, include the caterer to todayâs event. Include the freaking Assembly Hall doorman for that matter.â He waited for an acknowledgment, then tapped off the bud. He smiled at Satan. âDonât worry. Iâll get to the bottom of your conspiracy.â
âOh, so now itâs a conspiracy, is it?â
âYes. Iâm starting to think youâre more than just a random lunatic. Youâre part of some bigger con game. And somehow the Secretary General is involved. I saw you wink at him after Limbaugh was hauled away. Didnât think Iâd catch that, did you?â
Satan folded his hands on his knees. âAnd tell me, Dick. With which eye did I wink?â
âYour left.â
âExactly,â Satan said. âThe same eye that I said was giving me trouble, and for which the Secretary General gave me the eye drops. I winked at him as a final thank you for his small kindness.â
Dick shook his head. âNot buying it. Heâs the real Antichrist in your delusion, isnât he? Limbaugh was just an innocent decoy. Maybe you and Guptachek share the same insanity. If heâs got a psychological impairment thatâs been hidden from the public, my people will find it.â
âIâm sure they would, if it existed.â
From that point on, they rode in silence to their hotel.
